About Paleo Polly

Hi I’m Charlotte Smith, AKA Paleo Polly, welcome to my blog!

“Great tasting food has always been my passion. Obsessed with cookbooks from a young ages I have enjoyed exploring the world of food, recipe by recipe.  My love of food took me to Scandinavia, it took me to Cambodian street markets, it even took me to American fast food joints, it took me to France, where ample fois grais and copious amounts of red wine was consumed. 2004 aged 20, I was reading law at university; money was tight and meals were often made up of vegetables and starchy carbohydrates, washed down with ample alcoholic beverages of choice. Always made from scratch, taste championed calorie content, many delicious creamy pastas and carb-loaded rice and pitta dishes were consumed. Being in my early twenties I was quite capable of getting away with my not exactly nutritious diet, however following law school I noticed that I’d put on a few pounds. Never being ‘overweight’ as such, I felt a skinny fat- not exactly toned, very sluggish. I began running and hitting the gym. However being an absolute foodie, I was never one to skip meals or not eat (as some of my skinny friends did) I always enjoyed food and got stuck in, in the kitchen….

In 2010 alongside being a lawyer, I launched a cooking blog called Cookingfairy.co.uk. Cooking Fairy was a place to share my recipes, a place to share my love and interest in food. I educated myself in the art of cooking, and went on many different cooking courses. I then set up Yorkshire’s first supper club and had in the space of a year the BBC, and over 100 strangers welcomed through my door to enjoy my famous dinner parties! Next up was my love of foraging natural, wild British plants; I set up a foraging club which was attended by celebrity chef Stephanie Moon. Sourcing organic, local, ethical products was important to me & I attended an abattoir to report on how & where from our packaged meat in supermarkets is sourced.

During this period of my life I was a gym bunny and having a personal trainer was great however it was only in 2011 that it dawned on me that although exercise is important, nutrition is crucial. Being a food lover I became extremely interested in the power of food; its nutritional value, its healing, health benefits. I read pages and pages of nutritional information, I followed fitness blogs, and read health cookbooks. I really tightened up my diet and saw amazing result. Most importantly however eating the right food made me feelcharlotte-smith-paleoexpert great. Having a diet of mainly veg, organic meats and fish and pulses and complex carbs in the form of oats, brown rice and sweet potatoes made me function at 80% however, there was still something missing; I still got ‘food comas’ I’d feel full, and slugish especially when consuming pulses. I was confused about what was making me feel this way and I began to research ….. During my research, I came across the paleo diet! Everything made sense. Eat natural unprocessed foods your body was designed to eat. For the first time I did not feel bloated, I felt energized and my health issues cleared up. My skin was the best ever, I slept well at night.”

A little about the Paleo Diet

The paleo diet deviates from the traditional Western food pyramid; focusing on the consumption of vegetables and animal proteins (plus fish/ shellfish,) with small amounts of fruit, nuts and seeds. The paleo diet mimics the diet that our hunter-gather ancestors ate pre-agricultural revolution and advocates eating natural, clean, unprocessed foods.

The concept is in essence to eat the foods your body was naturally designed to eat.

This will result in weight loss, increased energy, significant health benefits and better sleep.

The team at Paleo Polly are always delighted to assist.
